Memories of what we haven't done

The collaborative performance between me and Irene Pascual developed to a bigger collaboration in which we inverted the roles of the artist/audience, inviting the public to participate actively and be the protagonists of the work.
We arranged the space with a kind of installation of ideas, materials and tools that the public could use as media of expression. The tools we took were inspired in the works that we could see during the previous days of the festival or generic ones used recurrently in performance art.
We were aware that for many of the visitors it would be the first time to create a life action or performance; that it would be a great opportunity to enjoy a coming together of this diverse group of people (curators, students, friends, artists and art lovers), who during almost a week were gathering daily together enjoying all the activities of the RAVVY festival.
We thought that would be the most happy of the ends.

LES PALLETTES DU KAMERin partnership with the Crane Lab, is pleased to announce the 4th edition of the RAVY festival (Yaoundé Visual Arts Encounters) from 07 to 13 April 2014 in Yaoundé,Cameroon.  On programmultiform exhibitions, performances, symposium, workshop...This edition will host about 35 artists and curators from 12 countries.

African contemporary art knows a particular boom currently. There has been in recent years a great interest on art works from the continent. The RAVY festival wants to pursue his vision of expression forum for artists from here and abroad, still more surprisingly, most relevant; incontestable values of the contemporary creation.
Today the festival focuses more on what is called "site specific art" including performance art. The festival will further provide more space to artists whose approach breaks down social barriers, aesthetic, philosophical or religious.
In our 2014 program, we want to bring artists to go beyond their discourse, keeping indeed the style and the expression that identifies them. They will have to adapt themselves to the local context and work in synergy with the audience.
The fourth edition of RAVY will focus on the promotion if some emerging and innovating visual artists that exist in Cameroon today. This edition will help many of them to be in direct contact with more experienced artists. It is a kind of bridge we put in place for a better affirmation of poorly known talents. This edition will allow different national and international artists to meet and share their experiences, setting new standards for contemporary art writing, but also contributing to let Yaoundé become a hub of visual arts in Africa.

The Calligraphic Machine / 書法機器

Inspired by the possibility that the temples in Tainan offer to ask direct questions or wishes to god, as well as with the tradition of Planchette-writing or spirit-writing, in which automatic writings serve to bridge communication between men and spirits, we created our calligraphic machine.
The Machine uses a “Made in Taiwan” special device normally used in market places, hanging above sweets or fresh food products to get rid of the flies.

How to use the Calligraphic Machine:

1- Prepare a white blank sheet of calligraphic paper
2- Suck the brush in black ink
3- The visitor asks for a wish or a question
4- The visitor presses the button to activate the calligraphic machine while being concentrate in the question
5- The answer will be created in the form of an abstract drawing
6- The visitor can take the drawing home and interpret it in calm
